How do I insert course files into the Rich Content Editor using the Content Selector?

Canvas recently introduced a new page design called the New Canvas User Interface (UI). Depending on your Canvas view, your page design may vary from the images shown in this lesson. However, the functionality and location of the components remain the same.

You can use the Rich Content Editor to insert course files from the Content Selector. The Rich Content Editor is used in features that support the editor (Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, Pages, Quizzes, or Syllabus).

Open the Rich Content Editor

Open the Rich Content Editor using one of the Canvas features which support the Editor.

Locate Content Selector

The Content Selector will automatically open when the Rich Content Editor is opened.

Click the Files tab.

Upload New File

You have the option to link to existing course files [1] or upload a new file. Click the Upload a new file link [2] to add a new file to the course.

Click Choose File or Browse. A popup window will appear in your browser.

Click the title of the file you want to insert [1]. Click Open to upload the file [2].

Click the Upload button.

Track the progress of your upload using the progress bar. The file will be automatically inserted wherever your cursor is in the Rich Content Editor when it is has been uploaded.

Save Changes

Click the Save button to save any changes to the post made in the Rich Content Editor.

Note: When using the Rich Content Editor in Assignments, Discussions, Pages, and Quizzes, you have the option to Save & Publish. When using the Rich Content Editor in the Syllabus and Discussions pages, the Save button may appear as “Update Syllabus” or “Post Reply”.

View your file.

If your document is supported by the document previewer, you can preview the file by clicking the Preview icon [1]. Download the file by clicking the pop-out icon [2].
