How do I send a message to my class as a student?

Canvas recently introduced a new page design called the New Canvas User Interface (UI). This lesson may include two images for specific steps to show the difference between the two designs. Unless otherwise indicated, the functionality and location of the components remain the same. The view available to you is determined by your institution.

You may be able to send a message to your entire class without having to select recipients one at a time.

If you cannot send a message to your entire class, your institution has restricted this feature.

In the Help Corner, click the Inbox link.

If you are using the New Canvas User Interface (UI), in Global Navigation, click the Inbox link.

Compose Message

Click the Compose icon to start a new message.

Select Course

In the course drop-down menu [1], select the course where you want to send a message [2].

Click the address book to send a message to the entire class.

Click the name of the course.

Add Message

In the subject field, add a subject for your message [1]. If you do not want a everyone to see all recipients and replies in the message, click the Send individual messages checkbox [2]. Type your message in the message field [3]. You can also add attachments to your message [4]. Click the Send button [5] when you are finished.

Your message will appear at the top of your Sent folder. When someone replies to your message, the message will be shown in the Inbox.

Note: You can reply to the recipient or reply-all to everyone in the class.
