Recent Updates

  • Some external apps require a URL configuration. This lesson shows how to add an external tool using the URL provided by the external app provider. To learn more about configuring external apps, visit the Edu App Center.

    Notes:

    • External apps can also be configured using a URL in sub-accounts.
    • Manually configuring an external app is an account permission. If you cannot configure an external app, this permission has not been enabled for your user role.
  • You can enroll in a course by viewing the details of the course listing. If you enroll in a course that requires payment, payment is required as part of the enrollment process.

When you have completed your course enrollment, you can view and begin the course in your Catalog Dashboard.

If you have never enrolled in a course with your institution, you will need to complete your registration before you can begin the course.

Note: Depending how your institution has set up their enrollment process, you may see additional enrollment fields.

    Manual Catalog Guide
  • You can manage all of your user defined fields for a catalog by managing your catalog. User defined fields display in the user registration page when a user first registers for a course or program. Information in user defined fields can only be collected as part of new user registrations; the fields do not display when existing users enroll in a course.

When user defined fields are created in the parent catalog, the fields can automatically be applied to each subcatalog. However, you can choose to create your own user defined fields in each subcatalog. User defined fields can be exported using the Catalog API.

    Manual Catalog Guide
  • When creating or managing a catalog, you can create custom user defined fields. These fields allow you to customize your user registration beyond the default fields of Full Name and Email. Information in user defined fields can only be collected as part of new user registrations; the fields do not display when existing users enroll in a course.

Any user defined fields in the parent catalog can automatically apply to subcatalogs. However, you can choose to create your own custom user defined fields for a subcatalog.

Note: In subcatalogs, you cannot add a new field if the subcatalog is inheriting user defined fields from another catalog.

    Manual Catalog Guide
  • If you are a student, you can view your grades in the Canvas app.

Grades can also be viewed as a Course Navigation link. However, the Course Navigation menu matches the browser version of your Canvas course. If you are a student and Grades is not available in Course Navigation, it will also be hidden from view in the app.

If your course is using Multiple Grading Periods, the Grades page shows assignments and grades within the current grading period. If your course is not using Multiple Grading Periods, the Grades page shows all assignments and grades for the entire course. If the Dashboard does not show a total grade, there are no active grading periods in your course.

The images in this lesson are shown for a phone display, but unless otherwise noted, tablet displays mirror the same steps.

Note: Currently observers cannot view student grades in the app.

  • You can view course files with the Canvas app. You can also view your personal files.

If you are an instructor, you can manage files for your course.

Note: The process of responding to a focused discussion or a threaded discussion is the same, although the layout of the discussion may look different depending on the depth of the discussion thread.

  • Instructors can create new Discussions using the Canvas app. The app also supports draft state, so as an instructor, you can create a discussion and publish it at a later date. However, once a discussion is published, it cannot be unpublished in the app.

If an instructor allows, students may be able to create new Discussions. However, student discussions are always published immediately to the course. If you are student and you cannot create a discussion, your instructor has restricted this feature.

The images in this lesson are shown for a phone display, but unless otherwise noted, tablet displays mirror the same steps.

  • The Canvas app helps you keep track of all course discussions. You can also view newly created discussions or changes to discussions in the Notifications tab.
