How do I make a Quiz available before or after the due date?

You can make your quiz available to all your students before or after the due date by setting availability dates.

Note: If you are looking to change quiz dates for individual students, you may want to create a new section in your course for those students, copy the quiz, and modify the dates for that section.

Availability dates in Quizzes differ from other assignment types; in Assignments and Discussions, if a student does not submit an assignment by the due date, the student can still submit the assignment at any time if there is not an availability date restriction. However, Quizzes have an auto-submit feature tied to the due date, which may affect student submissions.

If a student starts a quiz but does not finish by the due date, Canvas will automatically submit the quiz on the Due date. If the quiz allows late submissions (meaning that the Until date is blank or set after the due date), students who have not yet taken the quiz can do so before the Until date. For late submissions, if a student starts a quiz but does not finish by the Until Date, Canvas will automatically submit the quiz on the Until date. View examples of limiting end dates.

Student View

When students view a quiz, they are able to see the details of the quiz. Quiz details do not show due and availability dates in relation to the current time. However, within the quiz, Canvas notifies students regarding any upcoming quiz deadlines:

  • For timed quizzes, if students start a quiz close to the due date, the browser displays a notification banner to let them know they cannot complete the quiz in the full allotted time period. The quiz sidebar also displays a timer indicating how many minutes remain to complete the quiz. For example, if a 60-minute quiz has a due date of 11:59 pm and a student begins the quiz at 11:30 pm, the student will only have 30 minutes to complete the quiz. (The same notifications apply if the student is submitting a late quiz before an Until date.)
  • For quizzes with no time limit, if students start a quiz close to the due date the browser displays a notification banner to let them know how much time is remaining to complete the quiz.  For example, if a quiz has a due date of 11:59 pm and a student begins the quiz at 11:30 pm, the student will only have 30 minutes to complete the quiz. (The same notifications apply if the student is submitting a late quiz before an Until date.)
