How do I download Assignments in SpeedGrader?
Canvas recently introduced a new page design called the New Canvas User Interface (UI). Depending on your Canvas view, your page design may vary from the images shown in this lesson. However, the functionality and location of the components remain the same.
If a student or a student group has submitted a file upload for an assignment, you can choose to download it to your local computer for grading.
You can also leave feedback directly on some assignment types in SpeedGrader using Crocodoc.
Click the title of the assignment you want to view.
Download Individual Submissions
If you want to download individual student submissions one at a time or only download specific student assignments, click the SpeedGrader link.
Download Assignment File
In the SpeedGrader sidebar, click the Disk icon next to the assignment file.
Note: The location of this download is the same for both individual student and group assignments. If a student has deleted the assignment submission file from their user files, you will receive an error and will not be able to download the file submission. Contact the student to submit the assignment again or upload the file to his or her files.
Download All Submissions
If you want to download all student submissions together, click the Download Submissions link.
Download Group ZIP File
Open ZIP File
View Submission Files
Locate and open the downloaded .zip file (submissions.zip) on your computer.
In bulk downloads, note that Canvas automatically amends the file name for each submission type:
- For group assignments, the file name will include the name of the assigned group.
- For individual student assignments, the file name will include the name of the student (last name first).
If you made comments on the downloaded files, you can easily re-upload them to Canvas for your students by clicking the Re-Upload Submissions link.
Choose ZIP File
To successfully re-upload your files, you need to compress all your files back into a .zip file. If you are not sure how to create a .zip file, please contact your administrator or consult your computer's software manual.
Locate and upload your .zip file by clicking the Choose File or Browse button, depending on which browser you are using.
Note: Canvas can only re-upload files that retain their original file names. If you changed any of the file names associated with the assignment, you will need to change the names back to how they were when you downloaded them.
Confirm File Upload
Canvas will confirm your files have been uploaded and associated with student submissions . Canvas will also tell you what files, if any, were ignored in the upload .
To return to the assignment page, click the Back to Assignment Page link . To return to the Gradebook, click the Back to Gradebook link .
Note: Depending on your computer's operating system, your upload may include hidden files with a ._ prefix. Canvas will ignore these types of files, as well as any files that do not match the file name of any students' original submission.
