How do I use Chat in my course?
Canvas recently introduced a new page design called the New Canvas User Interface (UI). Depending on your Canvas view, your page design may vary from the images shown in this lesson. However, the functionality and location of the components remain the same.
Once Chat has been enabled in your course, the Chat tool can be used for real-time conversation in your course. Any user in the course can initiate a chat conversation. Although any user can join a chat, the tool's recommended limit is 50 participants.
All content in a course chat, including the chat history, can be viewed by anyone in the course.
A user must be actively viewing the chat tool to appear in the chat list. If you are an instructor, you may consider posting chat hours in the course calendar to let students know when you are available. Or you can open Chat in a new browser window while viewing other areas in Canvas.
Note: If you cannot view the Chat tool, Chat has not been enabled for your institution.
When you enter the chat room, you immediately join the chat. Chat discussion appears in the content window.
In the sidebar, you can view the names of course users in the chat . A user must be actively viewing the chat tool to appear in the list. (If you want to participate in Chat but want to perform other tasks in Canvas at the same time, you can open Chat in a new window.)
If you want Chat to create a sound alert when a new chat message appears, click the New Message Alert checkbox .
If you want to view the chat history, click the History link . The history will open in a new window.
