Video 1 - Standards and Change Management

00:01: Welcome to elevate standards alignment professional Edition onboarding video

00:05: series. This is a three-part series and you are viewing video.

00:09: Number one. The next few slides will cover topics that will be addressed in

00:13: the video series.

00:16: All day and functionality can be accessed through the ab connect API

00:21: the data and functionalities that are available include standards

00:25: with Associated metadata, including the ab.

00:27: Good standard relationships standard change events standard

00:31: search and Alignment, taxonomy search and Alignment alignment recommendations

00:36: and content search.

00:40: Additionally, you can access multiple alignment Solutions and applications through

00:44: the ab connect user. Interface features include interactive

00:48: tagging and recommendation applications.

00:50: Workflow project management system for alignments configurable

00:54: reporting and GAP analysis, system for assets and alignments and Alignment

00:58: change management reports.

01:04: In this video, we will focus on standards the available metadata and

01:08: change management.

01:12: Where do I start with Elevate standards alignment professional Edition?

01:18: The best place to get started is the API Documentation located in

01:22: the Developer Documentation Portal, where you will find AB Connect

01:26: interactive documentation. AB Connect refers to the

01:30: API. The documentation provides your development team

01:33: a wealth of information about the data available via the API and

01:38: how they can retrieve that data. But as a Product Manager, you

01:42: will also want to review the metadata that is available via the API and

01:46: determine what information is appropriate for your use case.

01:49: You can review the data using the example section in the documentation.

01:55: Select Elevate Standards Alignment under Partner Facing Services.

02:00: Expand the services menu, then the reference menu, and click Standards.

02:06: Scroll down to fetching a standard and view the details.

02:12: Here are some areas that can help to focus your review.

02:15: You’ll want to understand the hierarchy of the data.

02:18: Each standard has an Authority such as Texas, a Publication

02:22: such as Essential Knowledge and Skills, and a Document which is a subject and

02:26: adoption year. Additional insight into the data can be found in the API

02:31: documentation.

02:35: Let's explore the details. You'll want to consider the type

02:39: of numbering format you want to use. Raw

02:48: will be the number included in the state document and enhanced provides a little more

02:52: structure to the numbering, for example, by prepending parent numbers

02:56: to the standard number. The other types of numbering options are detailed

03:01: in the documentation.

03:06: The Utilization data included on a standard might include examples,

03:10: placeholders, clarifications, alignable, supporting, and

03:14: others. Reviewing this area will help you to direct your programming

03:18: team to those elements that are important to you.

03:23: Some other areas to focus review are the years associated with a document

03:28: including, adoption year, implementation, and assessment years.

03:37: Standard Type describes the organizational levels within a document and includes

03:41: information like Curriculum Area, Context, Theme, Objective,

03:45: Example, etc.

03:50: Additional metadata can include standards in a list and Controlled Strand

03:54: Vocabulary. The Events endpoint details the changes that have been made to

03:58: a standard or document, as well as any new standards that are now available.

04:02: If you plan to store standards data, this can be an important area

04:07: for deciding what type of events will require an update of your data.

04:14: In Elevate standards alignment professional Edition, we provide multiple relationship

04:18: types that can be used to expand your current alignment to other authorities

04:22: or other documents within the same Authority will define

04:26: those here to help you decide which combination of relationships works

04:30: best for you.

04:33: An Origin standard is typically a national document like the Common Core

04:37: State Standards.

04:40: A derivative standard is when a state has adopted a standard identical

04:44: or similar to the origin, the API provides you data

04:48: to know if the standard has been modified or is identical to its origin

04:53: The origin and derivative relationships are related relationships.

05:00: Peer derivatives are related through a common origin standard an

05:04: example of this relationship includes two states that have adopted the Common Core

05:08: State Standards.

05:11: Replaces replaced by relationships are created when a state provides

05:15: guidance on how to migrate alignments from one document to another or

05:19: when they make an update within a document.

05:23: Crosswalks are curated by a set of rules and help users better understand similarities

05:27: among standards making alignment updates more seamless subject, matter experts

05:31: identify the skills, encompassed, by the standards, and at a high level two.

05:35: Standards are crosswalk when they have one or more skills in common.

05:38: This relationship considers the authors intent as well as the context of the standard Can

05:43: your product make use of these relationships if so you will want to understand how each of them

05:47: works?

05:51: Additional foundational relationships within the Elevate standards alignment

05:55: professional Edition or through the codification of Standards by two

06:00: taxonomies.

06:03: The concept taxonomy is a free-form taxonomy of common concept terms.

06:07: Each standard is represented by a set of Concepts which are organized

06:11: into key ideas to reflect the skills specified by the standard.

06:16: The topic taxonomy is a Ridgid 4 level hierarchical taxonomy

06:20: organized by subject and grade band or course each core.

06:24: 4 standard is classified with one or more broad topic as appropriate.

06:30: Now that you understand the data elements, you can work with your development team

06:34: on your API integration. If they do not already have a link

06:38: to the documentation and your API keys, please share that with them your

06:43: development team will help you decide if they want to use API calls to limit

06:47: the standards documents in your product or if you should manage standards using

06:51: our user interface.

06:54: If you determine it is best to manage standards data using our user interface,

06:58: then you can do so by logging on to the academic Benchmark system there

07:02: you will see several options on your home screen.

07:07: You can select manage standards license from the homepage or understands

07:11: on the top menu.

07:15: Once you've reached managed standards, you'll see a series of tabs across the top the

07:19: obsolete tab contains a list of standards that the state is no longer using you

07:23: can remove them from your license or keep them based on your needs.

07:28: To configure standards, go to the configure tab drill down into

07:32: the selected standard set and then check or uncheck the boxes for the standards.

07:36: You can also select individual sections of a document

07:44: You'll find those standards that you have configured on the disabled table.

07:50: How am I notified that a state has updated their standards?

07:55: Check out the community where you can see which standards were released in the prior month.

08:06: In the community, you will also be able to see standards reference by Authority

08:10: where you will find information about upcoming standards adoptions.

08:17: You can see what standards have been released at any time by clicking on the what's

08:21: new link from your homepage or visiting our community documentation.

08:27: Standards are continually changing and there are multiple ways to understand and

08:31: monitor those changes as they affect your workflows and alignments.

08:37: The Events endpoint in the API details

08:40: the changes that have been made to a standard or document, as well as any new

08:44: standards that are now available. Once you've clicked into "Events," scroll down

08:48: to "Finding Series of Events." Then, scroll down to find

08:52: the data section. In the "Target" section

08:56: under "Attributes," you can see the options for the item that has had a change.

09:00: Similarly, you can expand change type to see what types

09:04: of changes are recorded. If you plan to store standards data, this

09:08: can be an important area for deciding what type of events will require an update

09:13: of your data.

09:16: See the report management system of the UI under alignment planning reports.

09:22: This is where you can request reports that give information about which documents have

09:26: been added or changed in your license.

09:28: And also which specific standards have changes with the type of change indicated.

09:34: Access the documents report

09:37: Click on the report type desired and fill out the criteria you wish to request.

09:43: Once the report completes you can download it in Excel and see the relevant results.

04:24: The reporting system under the reports tab allows you to generate CSV

04:29: Excel or HTML files of your asset and Alignment data.

04:35: It is important to understand that regardless of the method of asset record, creation

04:39: and Alignment process selected. The data is all housed within a

04:43: single data store and can be included in reports.

04:48: See the link under the support tab to create a support ticket under

04:52: support. You can also connect to the instructor Community where you can find

04:56: additional detailed articles about Elevate standards alignment.

05:02: Under alignment, you will find links to different uis that can be used for alignment.

05:06: We will walk through those now and cover projects a bit later as part

05:10: of this walkthrough

05:14: Elevate standards alignment. Professional Edition comes with several tool options

05:18: that provide flexibility to meet your needs.

05:20: Let's first, look at the alignment app note that you will need to log in.

05:24: Again, once you click into the alignment app, the alignment app is built on

05:28: the ab connect API. Which means all of the functionality you

05:33: see within the app can be replicated within any integrated system.

05:36: Additionally, with the use of a b globally unique identifiers,

05:40: or guides within the URL, this UI can easily be linked to

05:44: from your tools, such as your content management system, to tie your content

05:49: directly to the alignment process.

05:55: The Alignment App provides the ability to align bidirectionally

06:01: starting either with Learning Objects and predicting related standards;

06:06: or beginning with standards and recommending relevant Learning Objects.

06:13: With the use of learning object Collections and standards collections that are visible across

06:17: all users. One can quickly navigate to their task at hand.

06:22: Setting up collections is described more in our documentation.

06:29: The alignment app is powered by the crosswalk relationship and the user can

06:33: control which crosswalk relationships Drive the predictions. Currently

06:37: we have built out our curated crosswalks in English Language Arts, Mathematics,

06:41: Science, and Social Studies.

06:45: This app also has a useful search feature that can assist in manual alignments

06:49: to all subjects.

06:54: Please see the documentation in the community for information on

06:58: additional features.

07:02: Back to the main dashboard, we will now provide an overview of projects.

07:06: It is through projects that you will be able to access additional alignment.

07:10: Methods, the projects tab allows you to define a set of alignments based

07:14: on criteria for standards and assets, you can use projects to assign

07:18: work to a liners enable review of the alignments and to

07:22: manage a workflow using our asset status.

07:24: It's helpful to note that the project set up here can also be used in

07:28: our reporting system to identify the set of data to report against.

07:36: Aligning by concept taxonomy and the ab connect confidence

07:40: algorithm. Entering the alignment tool through projects gives

07:44: you access to more alignment, interfaces, depending on the setup of your project

07:48: using a line by intermediary with the concept taxonomy

07:53: selected provides access to the machine learning prediction engine as part

07:57: of the standards maintenance process, our subject matter experts tag

08:01: most standards in a b connect with Concepts, from our concept.

08:04: Taxonomy, the concepts are used to break down the individual elements of

08:09: a standard the concepts are arranged in a series of key ideas.

08:12: So that they describe the standard

08:16: When you tag your content to standards or directly to the concept, taxonomy,

08:20: the algorithm begins to recommend standards based on those tags.

08:25: As you tag more standards and Concepts, the algorithm refines, its results

08:29: as it learns, what your content is about.

08:36: You can create the relationships between assets and standards or concepts and

08:41: review, the machine learning powered predictions, using rui, or using

08:45: your API integration.

08:47: To have a b connect predicts, the most accurate standards for your content, you'll

08:52: want to follow the best practices outlined in our community, documentation.

09:00: Depending on the type of content, you have the subjects to which you want to align

09:04: and which authorities you are focused on. You might find that one of our other

09:09: approaches to alignment better meets your needs.

09:14: In addition to the concepts, tagged to standards Elevate, standards alignment,

09:19: tags, all core 4 standards with our topic taxonomy.

09:22: The topic taxonomy is designed similar to a table of contents.

09:26: It sits above and is broader than the standards.

09:29: The topic taxonomy can be used as a broad intermediary.

09:32: If that is most applicable to your alignment needs by tagging your content

09:36: with the topic or topics, you can then receive predicted standards based on the

09:40: standards that are also tagged to these topics.

09:43: This type of alignment can be done via the API or using the

09:47: option to align by intermediary topic.

09:49: Taxonomy scenarios in, which you might align by topic include

09:54: content, more appropriate to Broad standard relationships, or use

09:58: cases primarily for Content discovery.

10:03: Aligning directly to standards Elevate, standards alignment, professional

10:07: Edition. Also provides ways to align directly to a standard or set

10:11: of Standards based on the user's knowledge of their content and the standards

10:15: to, which they are. Aligning our API provides robust search functionality,

10:20: which the search standards feature in the alignment app, utilizes,

10:27: Through an option in projects, you can also view the full standards tree and

10:31: manually select appropriate standards.

10:36: Finally, in our standards navigation area, there is a toggle to

10:40: alignment mode. That further enables manual alignments.

10:46: Aligning through search or manual navigation.

10:48: Directly to standard supports use cases where the subjects are Beyond

10:52: those supported by our intermediaries, or for custom documents or learning

10:57: objectives. These methods are documented further in our

11:01: community.

11:06: Empowered with the many options, shared with you, consider what will work best

11:10: for you? Do you want to integrate the API into your own UI

11:14: so that you can manage workflows there? Or do you want to use one of the alignment

11:18: applications to get started? This decision, May likely depend

11:22: on the expertise and workload of your technical team.

11:25: Some other items to consider when making this determination are development

11:29: resources, desired workflow training of Staff Asset
