Read Jedi Code

Members of the Jedi Order follow a peaceful philosophy known as the Jedi Code.

Jedi Force trainees learn and follow:

Emotion, yet peace.

Ignorance, yet knowledge.

Passion, yet serenity.

Chaos, yet harmony.

Death, yet the Force.

Jedi knights and masters follow:

There is no emotion, there is peace.

There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.

There is no passion, there is serenity.

There is no chaos, there is harmony.

There is no death, there is the Force.

Jedi do not allow emotion to cloud their reasoning and interactions with other living beings. They believe that all life has value and seek to protect those who cannot protect themselves. However, they will not kill unarmed aggressors. They seek for peaceful resolutions to conflict but they do not force their ideals upon others.

Read Sith Code

The Code of the Sith looks similar to the Jedi Code. However, the philosophy explains that emotion, or passion, must guide Force-user's actions.

The Code of the Sith states:

Peace is a lie. There is only Passion.

Through Passion I gain Strength.

Through Strength I gain Power.

Through Power I gain Victory.

Through Victory my chains are Broken.

The Force shall free me.

Assess First Character

This is Darth Maul. The scowl on his face [1] indicates his current mood. Sith Force users follow their passions, or moods.

Assess Second Character

The adult [1] in this image, Qui Gon Gin, is running quickly toward a ship with the child Anakin [2]. They are fleeing imminent danger. Jedi protect innocent life.

Assess Fight

This fight starts when Darth Maul [1] jumps off his transport and attacks Qui Gon Gin [2]. Darth Maul is the aggressor in this fight. He is motivated by his emotion. Qui Gon Gin is protecting an innocent child and only fights long enough to ensure the child's safety and then his own.
