How do I use Alternate Terminology Pop-Ups in assessments?
You can add Alternate Terminology Pop-Ups to assessment content to provide definitions, simplified explanations, or images for specific words or phrases. These supports display as a visual indicator that students can select during an assessment to view additional context without changing the rigor of the item.
Alternate Terminology Pop-Ups can be added to passages, questions, and answer choices in item-based assessments.
Select Word or Phrase
In the Assessment Builder or Item Bank, open the item you want to edit.
In the Item Editor, highlight the word or phrase you want to support [1] then click the Alternate Terminology tool [2].
Configure Pop-Up Content
In the Popup Content window, review or edit the Display Text [1], enter supporting information in the Popup Content field [2], and optionally upload an image or add an image URL [3].
If an image is added, enter descriptive text in the Alt Text field [4], review the content in the Preview section [5], then click Save [6].
View Alternate Terminology Pop-Ups as a Student
During an assessment, students can identify supported words or phrases by the dotted underline visual indicator [1].
Students click or tap the underlined word to open the pop-up modal [2]. Hovering does not open the pop-up, ensuring accessibility for touch-based devices.
Students review the definition, simplified explanation, or image in the pop-up modal. The modal remains open until manually closed.
To close the pop-up, students click Close [3].
