How do I enable an elementary-level theme in a course as an instructor?

As an instructor, you can display a theme designed for elementary-level users in your course. This theme can be enabled by using the Canvas Elementary Theming feature option.

When enabled, this theme displays a font conducive to younger students and simplifies Course Navigation links. This theme is applied independently of any themes applied at the account level.

Open Settings

Open Settings

In Course Navigation, click the Settings link.

Enable Feature Option

Enable Feature Option

View Course Font

Canvas displays a new font, Architect's Daughter, in the Global Navigation Menu [1], Course Navigation Menu [2], and Breadcrumbs bar [3].

Note: If the feature option is turned off, the font changes from Architect's Daughter to the Canvas default, Lato.

View Rich Content Editor

View Rich Content Editor

The Architect's Daughter font also displays in the Rich Content Editor.

View Course Navigation Links

If your course has not customized the Course Navigation Menu, visible links default to Home [1], Announcements [2], Grades [3], Modules [4], and links for LTI tools [5].

All other links will display the Visibility icon for instructors [6], which means they will not display in Course Navigation for students [7].

To change what displays in the Course Navigation menu, you can manage Course Navigation links.

Notes:

  • If you have already customized the Course Navigation Menu in your course, enabling the Canvas Elementary Theming feature option will not modify your Course Navigation Menu links.
  • Announcements and Modules links will not display to students if content has not been added to those pages.
